RESIDENCY AT PAVILION DANCE SOUTH WEST

RESIDENCY AT PAVILION DANCE SOUTH WEST

I was delighted to be selected as an artist in residence at Pavilion Dance South West this month. I was allocated the contemporary dance company Made by Katie Green. Katie Green is a double award-winning choreographer and I soon learnt why: she possesses the dual gift of artistic creativity coupled with a methodical and analytical mind. The company was working towards a dance piece that would be performed in caves around the country. It was fascinating to watch the dancers, steered by Katie's suggested themes for exploration, to create moving works of art which I endeavoured to capture through my drawing. It was a challenge to reproduce such quick movements on paper so I decided to use my iPad and stylus which meant that I could create hundreds of drawings on the smooth surface and came up with a new minimalist style which captured the essence of the dance. When the dancers were exploring different ideas, for example the notion of diving in caves and rock pools, I decided to add colour to change the mood of the drawing. The resulting artwork become more and more abstract as I let the dancers and the music inspire me.
