Solo Exhibition at the Portico Gallery

19/07/10
The artist Harriet Muller will be holding her solo exhibition and book launch entitled Changing Lives at Portico Gallery, Knights Hall, 23A Knights Hill, West Norwood, London SE27 0HS from 11th - 25th September 2010 (10am – 7pm Monday – Friday and 10am - 5pm Saturday). It will be a chance to see the original paintings and the stories included in her eponymous book. The Changing Lives project stems from the artist’s own life-changing experience which prompted her to collect stories about events that had completely changed the lives of people she knows. She used them as the inspiration for a series of 21 paintings. Harriet will be painting at the gallery in the afternoons from Monday to Friday for the duration of the exhibition and there will be a coffee morning open to the public on Saturday 18th September from 10am – 1pm.
“I started this project at the lowest point of the recession when the news was full of doom and gloom. I saw how it affected me and those around me and I wanted to create a body of work that would inspire hope when all around only the contrary was proclaimed. I wanted proof that through sheer hope people could change their lives for the better,” says Harriet.
The Portico Gallery, run by Gallery Directors John Price and Rick Pinn, recently opened in what was an old theatre. Harriet’s exhibition celebrates hope and the Portico Gallery endorses this theme. “We encourage all levels of ability from the established artist, like Harriet, to the shy but inspired amateur.”
Harriet currently resides in Cricklewood and has exhibited in London, Cambridge, Seville and San José, Costa Rica. Her work is characterised by its vibrant colours and magical realism aspects owing to her Costa Rican heritage.
The Changing Lives collection will be on show at the Portico Gallery, Knights Hall, 23A Knights Hill, West Norwood, London SE27 0HS from 11th – 25th September 2010. Three hundred and fifty limited edition copies of the book, Changing Lives are currently for sale via this website for £14.99 (ISBN 978-0-9565460-0-5) and she will be signing copies on sale at the exhibition.
The gallery is a 2 minute walk from West Norwood Station and a 15 minute walk from Tulse Hill Station.
